Concentrating firepower in the nose, often works well - the Whirlwind had 4 x 20mm cannon, and the Beaufighter had the same and 6 x 303s in the wings, but I'd say the real forerunner to the A-10 was the Henschel Hs-129 which had either a 37mm or 75mm cannon in a pod under the nose - it was a real tank-buster....
