Me and The Northern Lights

Description

Shot in Norway, Bodø at a local place called Mjelle :D !

This evening / night me and my friend Gaute was going out to shoot a Draconid meteor shower that was comming to pass earth this day, the 8th October 2011 !

When we arrived at the "spot" we saw weak lines of Auroras at approx 08:45PM.
The meteors started showing up flying over the sky above our heads ! We knew the spot on the sky where the meteor shower was reported to come from, as best spotting place !

The Northern Lights faded across that point on the sky, as 2 weak lines just growing into 3 - 4 and then columns started to show up too :D !

The Aurora activity was reported as low or quiet. But my map sayed something else, more as extreme and severe activity !
The activity went from weak to extreme in no time ! As i like to say, i now know is very common with this phenomen of the solar winds and our magnetic fields ! :D

The Northern Lights exploded at around 22:23PM when my first picture of active lights was shot ! Then we had waited for some hours watching meteors comming into the atmosphere above us and lit up over the sky !
That extreme aurora activity was stealing the Draconid meteor`s show !

So we lost focus on the meteors and shot the auroras instead ! This actual picture was shot at 22:54PM !
I aimed my camera rig towards the V shaped lights at south western position, and run over to line up in the frame ! And shot this with the remote trigger in my hands, with a 30 meters distance as is the limit of the trigger ;) !
I think the picture became very dramatic actually ! Like WOW ! I captured more then i thougt about at the first when aiming the shot ! :D So i`m very happy with the result !

This picture is a RAW-14 bits file converted, with focus on the right colour and light setting from the moonlight with own white balance manually set on K 3750 ;)
The deviantID picture submitted is a JPEG FINE cropped for profile pictures !

Well what an awesome night this was ! No auroas reported or expected !
We shot some 20-30 meteors too ! I have know counted several more in my aurora shots ! :D

The show was over at 23:41PM but we went home at 01:30AM and then i could still see weak auroras from the window lit up the sky during the whole night !

Thanks to everyone, new friends and watchers with an awesome ammount of favs and views on my Norhtern Light pictures here on deviantART ! :D

To start off, I really like the concept of this shot. It will also work as a unique self-portrait. The positioning of the aurora which comes from the body of the subject is a really great idea. The subject leads you to look at the northern lights or possibly the other way around (depends on how I look at it). Although, the pose that the subject is apparently weird or unnatural. He seems to be looking at the camera while ignoring the awesome aurora that is right behind him. I feel that you were making sure the shutter release worked. Thus, the pose could be improved. From a distance, the positioning of the subject looks better. However, I am glad that you (as the subject) were able to keep still for eight whole seconds and keep the image appearing sharp from this size. I sense the hyperfocal distance was used to keep you as well as the background in focus which is nice. Overall, it is a really strong image that was worth clicking on.
