Honoring the first Aurora Chasers and Watchers with this monochrome picture ( black and white ) :D

Their story :

The first pictures was shot in black / white with old Film cameras and film plates. I wanted to make one similar to them ;)
I have got my hands on a couple of books showing some of the very first attempts of shooting this pictures.
Their pictures are black / white, with hard noise and grain. The Northern Lights itself is white and grey looking.
The stars is visible as white dot`s here and there.

The first peoples who saw the Northern Lights thought it was womens dancing on the sky and waving with their c loth`s.
Also they thought that it was the god`s showing themselves. Another one was that there was the old knights battles being reflected up there by god !

Well it`s fascinating reading the differenet opinions about this phenomen !
From the year of 1740 there where professors and scientists whom where writing books about their observations and opinions !
There where idea`s of clouds reflecting the sunlight. Alos they thought it was clouds producing thunder and lightning, just without the sound itself ! But how could that be ? Because the Northern Lights was only vissible without clouds !
Another opinion which i like is that there was sun reflections in the different atmospheres ( i mean this is the closest to what we know today )
It was going to take a long time before there was someone even close to saying that it had something to do with magnetism, more of this part later in another deviation (will be linked).

You know they did see colour too ;) yet all looks so old in black and white at the pictures from their time.
The first official picture of auroras was a flashy white picture of a weak line with a pitch black background
shot by a german named "Brendel".
It was the first picture made officially of the Northern Lights, shot on the 5th of January in 1892, with a shutter of 7 seconds !
The picture shows a unclear white line on a black background ;) It`s very impressing !

A lot of black / white pictures of the auroras was shot to document it`s movement and intence light !
They did name columns and lines, and coronas from the shots that was made.

Today we have understood the auroras yet more, but not everything, there`s more to see up there !
We also have powerfull digital cameras and optics to capture this light phenomen now.
This picture was converted to a black and white shot :D
Another picture from the same night was this : [link]

More aurora pictures at my folder ( with colours :D hehe ) here :

Have a nice week everyone ! Next time i will try to explain some words within the knowledge of Northern Lights activity !

I recognized and said that is film or a really nice digital replica of the look right away.
I kinda miss the traditional darkroom, I always used to push the film or use special
hand made screens that had different size grain textures to them.
A lovely story about the northern lights.

WOw! So beautiful! My aunt just told me that she's watching nordic lights right now where I used to live. Pity I don't live there now. It would be so nice to see some nordic lights again. Thank's for sharing your nice photos :) Säger man nydelig på norsk?

Bare hyggelig! :) En del säger att det är lite enklare för norrmän att förstå svenska än vice versa. Jag brukar förstå norska men ibland blir det fel =P
