Description

Please read my story about this spectacular phenomen and picture ;) just forget my bad english ^^ Best regards, SindreAHN from Norway Bodø ;)

The Aurora Borealis, known as the Northern Lights !

They appear in the dark winter night in the north lands, they dance for us, give us light and colour !
The Auroras have bin belived to be gods showing themselves for the Inuit`s !

A cool story there`s lot of story`s of the auroras ! :D

Well this night we knew there was going to be a nice lit show !
But we didn`t know where to go, so we wente to Austvika, Mjelle, and then the master decision was to drive to the fields at Festvåg ! :D We parked the car in the middle of the road and ran out on a big field with a old spooky house !

The Auroras was flickering, dancing and the light and colour was incredible ! I was so amazed i forgot my camera !
Shooting a picture with the car and the auroras V shaped above it i did, but after i was left in my self, i felt uncontrolled by this light, it was alive !
I`ve heard some auroras even have made sounds ! whispering ! I was so thrilled looking at this, i started to feel it in my neck ! I just sit there in the snow with the camera and the tripod in my hands :D i was engulfed with the spirit of winter !
I forgot all around me, it was pitch black ! and all i could see was this light`s dance and colour, mostly blue and green this night !

Well i got focused again and raised my gear and started shooting ! The first picture was a 30 seconds exposure at 21:31PM this picture was shot at 00:19AM ! :D

Shooting this phenomen me and my friend Gaute have learned a lot about our cameras and knowledge for the auroras shape and behavior !

_________________________________________________

IT HAPPENS RIGHT ABOVE US !

We stood there shooting pictures like crasy screaming to each other where to shoot looking for "new outbreaks" Later i borrowed Gaute`s wideangle zoom lense, a Tokina 11-16mm F2.8 ( which im now saving up to buy !) to test it ;) as he was going for the middle range zoom, (18-135mm).
The auroras suddenly, like nothing had bin there stopped dancing slowly and was gone for maybe a 1-2 minutes !

THEN suddenly out of nowhere a long line column shaped aurora started to appear ! at KP5/6 (more about KP later)
And i looked into a OUTBREAK of auroras ontop of us ! like right above us ! It didn`t take me long time to figure out it was a corona building up ! a outbreak point where lines and columns of auroras stretch from, a ``center explosion point `` where the geomagnetic activity is extremely high ! Where atoms and protons colide from the solar winds with our magnetic field up in the atmosphere creating this light !
It is called a ZENITH a tied point of auroras !

SETTINGS
I tilted my tripod head at 12 o`clock positiong the Tokina and the Nikon right up !
Settings 30 seconds ! over expose with 5+ E/V ! ISO 800 at F2.8 ! and 11mm wide zoom, point focal, metrix metering ;)
and hit the shooter !

I layed down in the snow looking at this auroral zenith feeling the magic and thrill by being out here ! While waiting for the camera to save the picture with a nice 14 bits RAW file ;) I was captured here by the Spirit of Winter !

Thanx to everyone of you deviant friends for reading my story ;)
Thank you for favs and comments which i will be very grateful for !

I will try to reply to all of you in the best way, so feel free to shoot a question about this phenomen :D

The Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights.

For centauries, the aurora was seen as a gateway between the earth and the Gods among the norse cultures. It was beleaved to be the glow on the Valkyries' armors, a signal that the Gods kept watch over the mortals, a beacon of hope.

In Phillip Pullman's triology His Dark Materials, it was even a way to see, and in the witchies' case, communicate, with paralell universes.

As for this partucular picture, the ideal exposure to capture such phenomenon is extremely hard to discover, specialy because of the light and intencity variations....indicating the mastery of the one taking this magificent picture...which makes us wish that we could wake up in the middle of the night, look out the window and see this magnificent spectacle.

And, if you look carefully enought, you can see a magnificent dragoon saluting you...perhaps a sign...that the Gods still watch over us.
